Chess Pretraining is a free research prototype run by Brendan Long. Using it means accepting these terms. They're short, and the short version is: it's an experiment, your answers are its data, and it comes with no promises.
What you're using
A chess move-discrimination trainer built to test whether dense labeled practice sharpens chess perception. It is not a product, not a coaching service, and not a guarantee that your play will improve. The source is public on GitHub under the MIT license.
Using it fairly
- You should be at least 13 years old.
- An account is for one person. Don't share it, and don't try to reach anyone else's.
- Don't attack the service: no automated hammering, no scraping the item bank in bulk, no attempts to break authentication or degrade it for other people.
- You're responsible for your password. Nothing resets it automatically; if you gave an email address, write to us from it and we'll set a new one by hand. Without one, a lost password means a lost account.
Accounts that abuse the service may be suspended or deleted.
Your answers are research data
Every trial you answer is recorded, and that record is the point of the project. By using it you agree that your responses may be analyzed and that anonymized data may be published or shared with other researchers. The privacy policy spells out exactly what's in that data — never your username or email. A published dataset will carry an open license, named when it is published.
No warranty
This is provided as-is, with no warranty of any kind. It may be unavailable, it may lose your ratings and history, it may change without notice, and it may shut down entirely. To the fullest extent the law allows, Brendan Long is not liable for any damages arising from your use of it. Don't rely on this service to store anything you care about.
Stopping
You can stop at any time, and take your record with you: Settings → Your data downloads it, and the same section deletes it — with or without an account. Or email self@brendanlong.com if you can't reach the button; see the privacy policy for what deletion covers.
Changes
These terms may change; the new version will be posted here with a new date, and continuing to use Chess Pretraining means accepting it. The page is versioned in the project repository, so its history is public.

The board pieces are the cburnett set by Colin M.L. Burnett, used under CC BY-SA 3.0. Positions come from the public Lichess game database, and the engine is Stockfish.
